Calculate Press Brake Tonnage for Metal Bending

This Tonnage Calculator helps you determine the force required to bend sheet metal on a press brake. An accurate tonnage calculation is critical for preventing damage to the machine and tooling, ensuring the safety of the operator, and achieving a precise bend.

How to Calculate Bending Force

Our calculator uses a common formula for "air bending," the most prevalent type of bending. You will need to provide the following information:

  • Material Thickness: The thickness of the metal sheet in inches.
  • Bend Length: The length of the bend you are making in inches.
  • V-Die Opening: The width of the opening in the bottom V-shaped die in inches. A common rule of thumb is that the V-die opening should be 8 times the material thickness.
  • Material Tensile Strength: The material's resistance to being pulled apart, measured in pounds per square inch (psi). The default is 60,000 psi for A36 mild steel.
  • The tool will provide the estimated tonnage required. This allows you to select the appropriate press brake and tooling for your job, ensuring a safe and efficient operation.
