Accurately Calculate BMI for Amputees

Standard Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations can be inaccurate for individuals with limb amputations because they don't account for the weight of the missing limb. Our Amputee BMI Calculator adjusts for this, providing a more precise assessment of body composition.

How It's Calculated:

The calculator uses established formulas to estimate the body weight before amputation. You will need to provide your current weight, your height, and specify which limb(s) have been amputated. The tool then calculates an estimated 'whole body' weight to provide a more clinically relevant BMI. This is essential for proper health assessment, nutritional planning, and medical care.

Amputation Weight Percentages

The calculation is based on the percentage of total body weight contributed by different body parts. The standard values used are:

  • Hand: 0.7%
  • Forearm (below elbow): 1.6%
  • Upper Arm (above elbow): 2.7%
  • Entire Arm: ~5.0%
  • Foot: 1.5%
  • Lower Leg (below knee): 4.4%
  • Upper Leg (above knee): 10.1%
  • Entire Leg: ~16.0%
  • By selecting the amputated limb(s), the calculator can estimate your pre-amputation weight and provide a more accurate BMI.
